Major General Sir Michael Edward Popham Carleton-Smith, DL (born 5 May 1931) son of of Lt Colonel D.L.G. Carleton-Smith and Barbara, Letitia Camilla (Nee Popham).

Educated at Cheltenham College Junior School[1], Radley College[2], RMA Sandhurst, Army Staff College, Joint Services Staff College and Royal College of Defence Studies.

Military Career[edit]

Commissioned into The Rifle Brigade in August 1951. Served with 1 RB in Germany, UK, Kenya during Mau Mau Emergency and Malayan Emergency, Instructor Eaton Hall Officer Cadet School, Exchange Officer PPCLI in Western Canada, GSO 2 HQ 1 Br Corps, with 3 Green Jackets in Cyprus, Hong Kong, and Borneo Confrontation, GSO 2 Tactics School of Infantry, Directing Staff National Defence College, Commanding Officer Rifle Depot, Colonel GS HQ BAOR, Commander Gurkha Field Force Hong Kong, Deputy Director SD MOD, DA Australia, Papua New Guinea and MA New Zealand.

Career[edit]

Director General Marie Curie Cancer Care, 1985-97, Vice Chairman National Council for Hospice and Specialist Palliative Care Services, Chairman Leicester Royal Infirmary NHS Trust, 1997-99. Chairman Progressive Supra Nuclear Palsy Association, Chairman Suzy Lamplugh Trust, Governor Royal Star and Garter Home, Vice President Integrated Neurological Services, and Vice President Marie Curie.

In 1963 married Helga Katja Stoss, born in Lubbecke, Germany 1941, (deceased 1993). Sons: General Sir Mark Carleton-Smith, KCB, CBE, ADC (Gen). CGS 2018. Andreas Carleton-Smith MC. CEO Control Risks Group Middle East and Sebastian Carleton-Smith, Property Developer Bournemouth. In 2011 married Lady Elizabeth Penelope Anne Francis (nee Fairfax-Crone) 2011, widow of Sir Richard Trevor Langford Francis KCMG (died 26 June 1992 Richmond Surrey).
