Professor Michael Eraut. (born Michael Ruarc Eraut; 15th November 1940 – 7th September 2018), known as Michael, was an English chemical educator. Winning the Fulbright Scholar at University of Illinois, Chicago, 1965-7. Later made a Professor of Education, University of Sussex, in 1986. Director of Institute for Continuing and Professional Education 1986-91. Professor Emeritus from 2006.

He spent the rest of his academic career at Sussex, including six years as director of the Institute for Continuing and Professional Education (1986-91). His best-known book, Developing Professional Knowledge and Competence (1994), remains a seminal text in the field. He was also involved in the evolution of the new Sussex and Brighton Medical School.

Early years and Education

Michael was born in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, then British India. His father Ruarc Eraut, was a lieutenant colonel. For school, Michael and his brother Dennis Eraut travelled from British India to school in Cambridge, England.

He was a scholar at Winchester College, and in 1959 he won a scholarship to Trinity Hall, Cambridge, to read natural sciences. obtaining a first-class honours BSc degree in natural sciences.. He completed his PhD in organic chemistry at Cambridge in 1965 (BA PhD). He was later awarded a Fulbright Scholar at University of Illinois, Chicago.

Career

He was Professor of Education, University of Sussex, since 1986. Director of Institute for Continuing and Professional Education 1986-91. Professor Emeritus from 2006.

He spent the majority of his academic career at the University of Sussex, including six years as director of the Institute for Continuing and Professional Education (1986-91), which was later named as Institute of Continuing Professional Development. His best-known book, Developing Professional Knowledge and Competence (1994)., highlighting the field of Professional development remains a seminal text in the field. He was latterly involved in the evolution of the new Brighton and Sussex Medical School

Personal life

Through a shared love of music, Michael met Cynthia Wynne, who was reading classics at Girton College Cambridge and also played the violin. They married in 1964. He completed his PhD in organic chemistry in 1965. During this time his interest in teaching and learning emerged, when he was asked to supervise some deaf undergraduates. While this experience contributed to his lifelong studies in education, his scientific background enabled him to interact with a range of scientists.

Death and reactions

Eraut died on 7th September 2018 in Burgess Hill, from Dementia leading to Alzheimer disease, at the age of 77.

The Times (British) newspaper wrote that as a younger man he was "a brilliant young PhD student of organic chemistry ... with growing fascination, how students learn." The Guardian (British) newspaper described Eraut as "his academic prowess and intellectual incisiveness … will also be remembered for his insights and personal warmth". There were also tributes from Winchester College and the University of Sussex.

He was highly influential as the Director of the Institute for Continuing and Professional Education (1986-91). .

He was the founder editor of the Blackwells journal (later Wiley-Blackwell) Learning in Health and Social Care, 2002-6.

His best known book, Developing Professional Knowledge and Competence (1994) has now been considerably updated by his recent publications. These cover pre-qualification, early career and mid-career learning and range over 12 professions; and include substantial research projects funded by the ESRC and the Departments of Education, Health and Employment. Other works include publications for the Open University.
