Michael Fiddelke is an American business executive who is the chief executive officer (CEO) of Target Corporation since February 2026.[1][2] He succeeded Brian Cornell, who transitioned to the role of executive chairman.[1] Fiddelke previously served as Target's chief operating officer (COO) and chief financial officer (CFO), and is the second Iowan to lead the company, after Kenneth Macke.[3]
Early life and education
Fiddelke grew up on a small farm near Manchester, Iowa, in Delaware County, where his family raised beef cattle and sheep and grew corn and soybeans.[2][3] He has credited his upbringing with instilling his work ethic, noting that his father required him to complete chores each morning before school.[3]
Fiddelke earned a Bachelor of Science in industrial engineering from the University of Iowa in 1999.[3][4] He later earned a Master of Business Administration from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management in 2004.[3]
Career
Early career
Before joining Target, Fiddelke worked for three years as a consultant at Deloitte Consulting.[5]
Target Corporation
Fiddelke joined Target in 2003 as a summer intern while attending business school at Northwestern.[3][2] He was hired full-time as a financial analyst in 2004 and subsequently held leadership positions across the company's merchandising, finance, human resources, and operations divisions.[5][1]
Fiddelke served as senior vice president of operations before being named chief financial officer (CFO) and executive vice president in 2019.[3] As CFO, he oversaw financial planning and analysis, internal audit, accounting, investor relations, treasury, tax, and risk management, as well as Target's financial and retail services, including the Target RedCard.[4]
In January 2024, Fiddelke was promoted to chief operating officer (COO), overseeing Target's nearly 2,000 stores, its global supply chain, fulfillment services, and enterprise operations.[3][1] He also led the company's newly formed Enterprise Acceleration Office, an initiative focused on improving operational efficiency.[3]
On August 20, 2025, Target's board of directors unanimously elected Fiddelke to succeed Brian Cornell as CEO, effective February 1, 2026.[1] Cornell transitioned to the role of executive chairman.[1] Upon taking office, Fiddelke outlined four strategic priorities: leading with merchandising authority, elevating the guest experience, accelerating technology, and strengthening team and communities.[5][6]
Other positions
Fiddelke serves on the executive committee of the National Retail Federation and on the board of the Retail Industry Leaders Association.[5] He is also a member of the board of Shipt, a same-day delivery company acquired by Target in 2017.[3]
Personal life
Fiddelke lives in the Twin Cities area with his family.[3]
