Michael A. Gorin is an American urologist, surgeon-scientist, and academic physician. He is Associate Professor of Urology and Associate Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Human Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.[1] His clinical practice is based at Mount Sinai Doctors Long Island in Greenlawn, New York, where he serves as Director of Urologic Services.[2] He specializes in the management of male voiding dysfunction resulting from benign prostatic hyperplasia, the diagnosis and treatment of early-stage prostate cancer, and complex kidney stone disease. Gorin is known for his contributions to prostate cancer diagnosis, molecular imaging of genitourinary malignancies, and the integration of artificial intelligence into urologic practice.[3][4]

Early life and education

Gorin grew up on Long Island, New York, where he attended Lynbrook High School. He received a Bachelor of Science with Distinction in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Michigan in 2007 before earning his Doctor of Medicine, with Distinction in Research, from the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine in 2011. While in medical school, he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.[5]

Following medical school, Gorin completed a general surgery internship, urology residency, and fellowship in endourology and minimally invasive surgery at the James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he received advanced training in endourology, minimally invasive surgery, robotic surgery, and urologic oncology.[5][6]

Career

After completing his fellowship, Gorin joined the faculty of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He subsequently served on the voluntary faculty of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine before joining the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in 2022 as Associate Professor of Urology. In 2025, he was additionally appointed Associate Professor in the Windreich Department of Artificial Intelligence and Human Health.[1]

In addition to his academic appointments, Gorin serves as Medical Director of the PeakPoint Central Nassau Surgery Center in Carle Place, New York. He played a leading role in the planning, development, and regulatory approval of the ambulatory surgery center, including navigating the New York State Certificate of Need process. The facility, which opened to patients in August 2026, was established to expand access to outpatient and minimally invasive surgical care across multiple surgical specialties for patients on Long Island.[1][7]

Clinical practice

Gorin's clinical practice focuses on diseases of the prostate and minimally invasive urologic surgery. He is among a relatively small number of urologists in the New York metropolitan area who perform holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP), a minimally invasive procedure for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia.[2][8]

His practice places particular emphasis on the diagnosis and management of early-stage prostate cancer, including prostate cancer screening, MRI-guided risk stratification, transperineal prostate biopsy, active surveillance, and focal therapy.[9][10] He has advocated for transperineal prostate biopsy as an alternative to the traditional transrectal approach and has contributed to studies evaluating its safety, diagnostic performance, and implementation into routine clinical practice.[11][12][13] He also treats complex kidney stone disease using advanced endoscopic and minimally invasive surgical techniques.

Research

Gorin is best known for his work in molecular imaging of prostate cancer. He was among the first investigators to evaluate prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-targeted PET imaging using 18F-DCFPyL (later commercialized as piflufolastat F 18, marketed as Pylarify).[14] He was involved in the design and conduct of the multicenter OSPREY and CONDOR clinical trials, which supported approval of the radiotracer by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2021.[15][16][17] Piflufolastat has since become a widely used molecular imaging agent for prostate cancer staging and detection of recurrent disease.[17][18]

His research has also addressed prostate cancer screening, active surveillance, focal therapy, MRI-guided diagnosis, transperineal prostate biopsy, and renal tumor imaging.[19][9] More recently, his academic work has expanded into artificial intelligence, computer vision, and large language models for applications in clinical decision support, physician workflow, medical education, and patient care. He has contributed to the development of software tools intended to improve physician efficiency and the delivery of urologic care.[20][21] He is a named inventor on multiple U.S. patents relating to urologic and imaging technologies.[22][23][24]

According to Google Scholar, Gorin has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed publications, review articles, editorials, consensus statements, and textbook chapters, and his work has been cited more than 16,000 times.[3][4]

Editorial leadership

In 2022, Gorin was appointed Editor-in-Chief of BJUI Compass, the open-access companion journal to BJU International.[25] He has also served on the editorial boards of several international journals, including BJU International, Urologic Oncology: Seminars and Original Investigations, and the World Journal of Urology.[26][27]

Honors and awards

Gorin has received academic and clinical honors during his career, including the Drs. Carl and Barbara Alving Endowed Award for Outstanding Biomedical Research from the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine and the William F. Rienhoff, Jr., M.D. Scholar Award from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.[5] He has been designated a Castle Connolly Top Doctor and recognized as Best Urologist in the Best of Long Island awards.[28][29]

Personal life

Gorin was raised on Long Island, New York. He is married to Heather Gorin, corporate counsel for Danfoss.[30] They have two children.
