Michael A. "Mike" Israetel (born May 30, 1984) is a Russian-American sport scientist, competitive bodybuilder, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt,[1] and co-founder of the evidence-based fitness and nutrition company Renaissance Periodization. He holds a PhD in Sport Physiology from East Tennessee State University and has lectured in exercise science and sports nutrition at several U.S. universities.[2][3]

Early Life and Education

Israetel was born in Moscow, Soviet Union, and lived there until age 7, when his family emigrated to the United States on June 5, 1991, settling in Michigan.[4] He earned a B.S. in Movement Science from the University of Michigan, where he also competed in collegiate powerlifting.[5] He completed an M.S. in Exercise Science at Appalachian State University,[6][7] then a PhD in Sport Physiology at East Tennessee State University in 2013; his dissertation examined the interrelationships of fitness characteristics in Division I athletes.[8]

Academic Career

From 2013 to 2015, Israetel served as an assistant professor of Exercise Science at the University of Central Missouri,[9] followed by appointments at Temple University and Lehman College teaching courses in sports nutrition, strength training, and hypertrophy.[3] He has also consulted as a sport‑nutrition specialist for the U.S. Olympic Training Site in Johnson City, Tennessee.[10][3]

Athletic Career

A former high-school wrestler, Israetel has competed in powerlifting and heavyweight bodybuilding.[11] Israetel qualified for the 2020 NPC Nationals after placing first in the heavyweight and masters over-35 divisions at the NPC Diamond Classic.[12] He is also a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under Josh Vogel and competes in the Ultra Heavy division.[13][14]

Business Career

Israetel co-founded Renaissance Periodization, currently known as RP Strength, with training partner Nick Shaw in 2012.[15] Operating out of Charlotte, North Carolina, RP provides online coaching, automated diet and training templates, and a suite of mobile apps. As of 2025 the company reports more than 250,000 clients worldwide and a YouTube channel exceeding 3.5 million subscribers.[16]
