Ivan currently practices at the University of Miami School of Medicine and one of a few neurosurgeons in America with a clinical practice and basic science research laboratory focused on brain and skull base tumors. [1]. He is internationally recognized for his work in developing and expanding the field of laser interstitial thermal therapy as evidence by his authored manuscripts: "Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy: Lighting the Way to a New Treatment Option in Neurosurgery" [2] "Laser Ablation of Newly Diagnosed Malignant Gliomas: a Meta-Analysis."[3] and "Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy as a Primary Treatment for Deep Inaccessible Gliomas."[4] He also has made several significant advances in understanding the biology of brain tumors a including glioblastoma, one of the most difficult to treat brain tumors. Since 2015 he has acted as the Director of Research for the University of Miami Brain Tumor Initiative [5] within Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. Ivan also serves as the Chief of Cranial Neurosurgery and Neuro-oncology Service and Co-Director of Neurosurgery at Jackson South Medical Center.

Biography[edit]

Dr. Ivan graduated from Cornell University with a B.S in Chemical Engineering and received a Master’s degree from Rutgers University. He was president of his class and a Gold Humanism Scholar at New Jersey Medical School. His neurological surgery training was completed at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF)[6]. He has completed 2 fellowships in brain tumors, one at UCSF and another at the University of Miami.

Dr. Ivan's research focuses on the development and discovery of novel brain tumor treatments. He combines clinical and basic science research to accelerate the bench to bedside approach in neuro-oncology. He has over 60 publications, books and book chapters understanding the biology of brain tumors, finding novel biomarkers for brain tumors, developing drug delivery mechanisms, investigationg minimally invasive treatments of tumors, and improving patient quality and outcomes in neurosurgery. His research work on glioblastoma has earned him multiple grants from the NIH, Neurosurgery Research and Education Foundation (NREF), American Cancer Society, and North American Skull Base Society. Dr. Ivan's laboratory is currently located at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center in Miami, Fl. Dr. Ivan is also a national leader in his field acting as the Vice Chairman of the Young Neurosurgeon's Committee for the American Association of Neurological Surgeons [7] and the Treasurer of the Florida Neurosurgical Society[8]
