Michael John Ayer

Michael John Ayer is a New York entrepreneur, business owner, and author. Michael John Ayer's family is of English and Scottish descent, and are direct descendants of John Ayer (1582–1657), one of the original European settlers to Massachusetts, settling in Ipswich in 1635, Haverhill, and Salisbury. Additional Ayer descendants include Frederick Ayer (1822–1918), an American businessman and the younger brother of patent medicine tycoon Dr. James Cook Ayer. In addition to his involvement in the patent medicine business, he is better known for his work in the textile industry. After buying the Tremont and Suffolk mills in Lowell, Massachusetts, he bought up many textile operations in nearby Lawrence, combining them in 1899 into the American Woolen Company, of which he was the first president. Frederick Ayer's daughter, Beatrice Ayer (1886–1953), married General George Patton in 1910. Dr. James Cook Ayer is famous for his line of "patent" medicines, including Ayer's Sarsaparilla, Cherry Pectoral, Ague Cure, Hair Vigor, and others. Michael John Ayer's father, George L. Ayer (1923– ), by coincidence, also spent many years in the health and beauty industry manufacturing and marketing similar products for cough, hair, and cosmetics. Ayer, MA was named for the Ayer family in 1871, and the Ayer Mansion in Boston, now a National Historic Landmark, is the only surviving residence created by American artist and designer Louis Comfort Tiffany. Michael John Ayer lives in New York with his children, Isabella Kathryn Ayer, Liliana Cristina Ayer, Michaela Beatrice Ayer, and Billion John Ayer.
