Michael Vincent Marrale (born February 9, 1974), is an American business executive and Forbes contributor.[1] Entering the data science industry over fifteen years ago,[2] Marrale was an early adopter of alternative data in the investment research process.[3] He has led some of the largest data-driven equity research divisions globally[4] and currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of M Science.[5][6]
Early Life and Education
Marrale attended Binghamton University School of Management where he received a bachelor's of science degree in accounting.[7]
Career
Marrale began his career in finance at D.H. Blair & Co., Prudential Securities, and Lehman Brothers as an institutional broker.[8] In 2002, he was recruited by RBC Dain Rauscher[9] (now known as RBC Wealth Management),[10] where he joined as a middle-market specialist servicing hedge funds and small to mid-sized institutional clients.[11] It was while working as a technology analyst at RBC that Marrale noticed the lack of data-driven or quantitative information being incorporated in the investment research process.[12] He was later named Head of Sales Trading.[13][14][15]
In 2012, Marrale moved to Investment Technology Group, Inc (ITG), where he led the firm’s data-driven research and high-touch trading functions as Head of U.S. Research, Sales & Trading,[16][17][18] which during that time was recognized globally as one of the largest divisions of its kind.[4] During Marrale’s tenure at ITG, he was involved in the 2015 divestiture and sale of its energy research business, which was bought by Warburg Pincus for over $120 million.[19][20] He credits his move to ITG as transformative, leading him to get more involved in the fintech space.[12]
In 2016, Leucadia National Corporation announced its acquisition of ITG Investment Research, LLC, and it subsequently was rebranded as M Science, with Marrale appointed as CEO.[21]
M Science began expanding its sector coverage and alternative data solutions[22] [23] across the U.S. and Europe under Marrale’s direction.[24] At a conference in 2018, Marrale stated that M Science was the first alternative data provider in Europe.[25] As an early adopter, he has played a role in attracting institutional investors and the hedge fund community to alternative data as a means of generating alpha in financial markets,[12] in the process growing M Science’s customer base to over 100 discretionary asset managers,[26] in addition to corporate clients.[2] In 2018, M Science acquired TickerTags, which uses a mention frequency tool to analyze conversational data in order to detect market trends.[27]
In the Media
Marrale is a contributor to Forbes[28][29] and has also written on alternative data in MarketWatch.[30] He has been featured in publications such as Futures Magazine[2] and Benzinga.[31] Additionally, he has been cited in The Wall Street Journal,[32] Bloomberg,[33] Business Insider,[34] Institutional Investor,[35] Securities Finance Monitor,[6] and WatersTechnology.[3]
Marrale is a recurring guest speaker and panel member at industry events and conferences around the world, including the BattleFin Discovery Day Series,[36] AI and Data Science in Trading Conference,[37] Battle of the Quants,[38] and Data Disrupt’s Financial Services Data Analytics Ecosystem Conference.[39]
Other ventures
He currently serves on the Board of Associates of the Ronald McDonald House of New York[40] and is a member of the Young Presidents’ Organization.[41] Marrale has previously served as Trustee and Treasurer for The Nature Conservancy on Long Island,[42] as well as a former advisory board member at Cians Analytics Inc.[43][44] In 2015, he was recognized for his work in the community in partnership with the non-profit Doing Art Together.[45]
Personal life
Marrale resides on Long Island, New York. In his free time, he enjoys boating, skiing, and spending time with his three children.[12]
