He graduated in 1991 from Fulton City High School in Fulton, Kentucky.[1] He was a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

He graduated with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering in 1997 from the University of Kentucky.[2]

He graduated with a M.D. from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine in 2001.[2]

He was a United States National Library of Medicine Biomedical Informatics Fellow at Decision Systems Group, Brigham and Women's Hospital from 2004-2007.[3] The fellowship director during this period was Robert A. Greenes.[3][4] Mentors included Lucila Ohno-Machado[5] and David Bates[6]. During his fellowship, he graduated with a M.S. in Medical Informatics from Harvard–MIT Program in Health Sciences and Technology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2006.[7] His thesis was entitled "Development of statistical methodologies and risk models to perform real-time safety monitoring in interventional cardiology." with advisor Frederic S. Resnic.[8] He also graduated with a Master's in Public Health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in 2007.

He was an Internal Medicine Resident from 2001-2004 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Indianapolis.[9] The fellowship director during this period was Robert Lubitz.[10]

Longtime collaborator in the OHDSI community.[18][19]

He has been involved with National Academy of Medicine since 2017, with his participation in the Digital Health Learning Collaborative meeting to explore opportunities in ML/AI.[20] This workshop led to his involvement as Co-Chair with Sonoo Thadaney Israni and lead editor in the Special Publication "Artificial Intelligence in Health Care: The Hope, the Hype, the Promise, the Peril," released online in December of 2019.[21][22] He also was a co-author on NAM's chapter entitled "Advancing Artificial Intelligence in Health Settings Outside the Hospital and Clinic"[23] which was a part of the GAO Technology Assessment for Artificial Intelligence in Health Care Benefits and Challenges of Technologies to Augment Patient Care (2020).[24] He was also a co-author on NAM's chapter entitled "Meeting the Moment: Addressing Barriers and Facilitating Clinical Adoption of Artificial Intelligence in Medical Diagnosis"[25] which was a part of the GAO Technology Assessment for Artificial Intelligence in Health Care Benefits and Challenges of Machine Learning Technologies for Medical Diagnostics (2022).[26] In 2025, he was a co-editor in the Special Publication "An Artificial Intelligence Code of Conduct for Health and Medicine: Essential Guidance for Aligned Action."[27][28] He was the lead author for Artificial intelligence publication "Artificial Intelligence In Health And Health Care: Priorities For Action"[29], one of six in the 2025 release of the NAM's Vital Directions in Health Care series[30], which is released with each incoming U.S. administration. He was elected as a member of the National Academy of Medicine in 2025.[17]
