Michael McDonell is an American clinical psychologist at Washington State University Spokane who works on treating substance use disorders and serious mental illness. In addition, McDonell is the director of the Promoting Research Initiatives in Substance Use and Mental Health (PRISM) Collaborative.[1]

McDonell has received multiple awards for his accomplishments in substance use and mental health research, as well as his collaboration with indigenous communities.[1] He is also a longstanding member of the Washington State Academy of Sciences.[2]

Early life

McDonell was born in Denver, Colorado on February 23, 1976. He was the eldest of three children and had two sisters.[citation needed]

Education

McDonell got his bachelor's degree at Gonzaga University in psychology and sociology.[citation needed] He continued his education at Washington State University where he received a master's degree in psychology and a PhD in clinical psychology.[citation needed] McDonell completed his predoctoral psychology internship at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. [citation needed] He went on to complete his postdoctoral fellowship in child psychopathology at the University of Washington School of Medicine.[1]

Notable contributions

McDonell is a leader in the research and implementation of contingency management as a treatment for substance use disorders.[citation needed] Contingency management (CM) is a treatment that gets people’s reward pathways back in balance.[3] For over a decade, McDonell has led research demonstrating that CM is an effective intervention in various settings and for various purposes, such as for alcohol use disorders.[4] In addition, McDonell has shown that CM is still effective when treating addiction in patients with cooccurring serious mental illness.[5][6] McDonell has collaborated alongside indigenous communities to find that CM is effective when it is culturally adapted to the communities it is being used in.[7][8] McDonell is a leading expert in the use of alcohol biomarkers such as ethyl glucuronide[9] and phosphatidyl ethanol[10] to improve the assessment and treatment of alcohol use disorder. McDonell has been cited in 3987 articles referencing his achievements in contingency management and other similar topics.[11]
