Michael Nachman
Michael W. Nachman is an American population geneticist and evolutionary biologist. He is a Professor in the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of California, Berkeley and Director of the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology (MVZ).[1][2] His research examines how evolutionary forces shape genomic variation in natural populations, with a particular emphasis on the genetics of adaptation and speciation in mammals (especially house mice).[3]
Early life and education
Nachman received his Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Michigan. He subsequently held an NSF–NATO postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Oxford and an NIH postdoctoral fellowship at Cornell University.[4]
Career and research
At UC Berkeley, Nachman is Professor of Integrative Biology and Director of the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, where his lab studies the genetic basis of evolutionary change using field studies, genetic crosses, and genome-scale analyses.[5][6] His work has contributed to understanding mutation rates in humans, the genomics of laboratory mouse origins, adaptive pigmentation, recombination and speciation, and adaptive introgression.[7][8][9][10]
