Michael "Mike" Andrew Raath (born 1941) is a South African geologist and palaeontologist. He is best known for his work on vertebrate palaeontology in Zimbabwe, contributing to the discovery of many fossil taxa and dig sites within the country. He is most notable for the naming of several dinosaurs, such as Syntarsus[1] (now Megapnosaurus) and Vulcanodon,[2] and he also contributed to the study of the Forest Sandstone and Pebbly Arkose Formations in Zimbabwe.[2][3][4][5]
Biography
He was born in 1941 in South Africa to Andy Raath (1910-1953), a former miner, and Norah "Bubbles" Rose Brownless Burke (1921-2000) and he has a brother, Auvergne Raath. His earliest scientific paper was in 1969, where he described Syntarsus rhodesiensis.[1] He worked at Rhodes University between 1958-63 and then the University of the Witwatersrand between 1978-2006.
