Michael Swaney (born May 6, 1978) is a Canadian visual artist based in Barcelona, Spain. He is known for his vivid, playful works that combine painting, sculpture, mosaic, collage, and drawing, often referencing folk art, childhood imagination, and popular culture. His practice has received international critical attention, including a feature in KUNSTFORUM International (2025) for its childlike visual language and playful aesthetic.[1]
Early life and education
Swaney was born in Kimberley, British Columbia, Canada, a Bavarian-themed town in the Rocky Mountains. His family relocated to Gibsons, BC in 1989. He attended one year of Fine Arts at University of Victoria and went on to earn a diploma in Design and Illustration from Capilano University, Vancouver, in 2000.
Career
He began exhibiting work in Vancouver in the early 2000s with the art collective Humanfive, and later settled in Barcelona in 2006. His career includes solo exhibitions across Europe, North America, and Australia, including No Games (Alzueta, 2024), Apricot Chakra (Piermarq, 2023), and 4 Hands (Steve Turner, 2022).
Critics have praised his intuitive and vibrant style, often likening it to childlike play and outsider art. Galleries like Bomma describe his work as featuring a Technicolor palette, faux-naïf references, and pop-cultural motifs.[2]
Public engagement
Swaney has shared his artistic philosophy through public talks and collaborative video projects:
- “L’art infantil de Michael Swaney torna a Palma” – A 2018 talk in Mallorca where Swaney discusses his signature childlike forms and visual storytelling.[3]
- Mosaic mural in Los Angeles – A 2019 interview documenting a private mural commission in Los Angeles, created in collaboration with artists from the Tierra del Sol Gallery.[4]
