Education[edit]

Michael Teys obtained a Bachelor of Law from Queensland University of Technology in 1985. Since then Michael has gone on to complete a Bachelor of Philosophy at the University of New South Wales and also completes postgraduate research at Deakin University.

Career[edit]

Michael Teys is a well-known and respected strata advisor, researcher, trainer and presenter. He has a range of experience as a former strata lawyer, where he worked in a private practice for 33 years. Michael has also established a career in strata management, as a majority owner of 11 strata management firms managing over 25,000 apartments throughout Australia.  

Michael Teys is currently the Director of Executive Education at Strata Institute Australia, where he writes and delivers the training programs they offer, and designs resources that aid strata managers in their careers.

Michael’s commercial and corporate advisory experience is supported by his academic research of the strata sector. Michael works with City Futures Research Centre, UNSW, where he has been awarded an Australian Research Council funded scholarship to complete a Master of Philosophy (Built Environment).

Michael is completing a thesis on the impact of large-scale mixed-use developments on urban renewal, and this work is part of a larger ARC-funded study, Reassembling the City: Understanding Resident Led Collective Sales of Property.

Michael also completed work as a research fellow for Deakin University. Michael participated in studies relating to the future of strata management and the regulation of building defects, specifically passive fire protection systems and cladding.

Proudly, Michael Teys is also the author of Deakin University’s, Building Defects Rectification Toolkit (2020).

  • Co-creator of the strata renewal concept adopted by NSW in 2015 for termination of strata schemes by collective sale and redevelopment plans.

Achievements[edit]

Michael Teys has been awarded an Australian Research Council funded scholarship to complete a Master of Philosophy (Built Environment). Michael is also known for his open water swimming abilities, and has been awarded the 199th Triple Crown of World Open Water Swimming in 2018 for his successful solo crossings of the English Channel in 2014, the Catalina Channel USA in 2017, and the circumnavigation of Manhattan Island NY in 2018.
