Michel Roccati (born 26 June 1991) is an Italian-German Athlete and Entrepreneur who became the first person to regain mobility in his legs and walk following a complete spinal cord injury.[1][2][3][4][5]

Biography

In 2017, after a motorbike accident, Roccati had a complete spinal cord injury.[6] In 2020, he took part in an innovative experimental biomedical clinical trial called “Stimo” led by Jocelyne Bloch and Grégoire Courtine. After the surgery, he gradually gained control of his lower limbs and started using his legs again.[7][8][9][10][11][12]

He gradually started going up and down stairs, swimming, cycling and using the machines in the gym, extending the use of the stimulation to many daily activities.[13][14]

In 2022, Roccati received the Guinness World Record for the farthest distance (500 m - 1,640 ft) walked by a person with total sensorimotor paralysis to their lower body[15][16]
