💼 Occupation
Engineer

Michele Judd is an American engineer and the inaugural Executive Director of the W. M. Keck Institute for Space Studies (KISS), a joint institute of Caltech and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Judd served as Executive Direction from the formation of the KISS 2008 to 2023. She has implemented over 100 multi-week workshops on a variety of scientific and engineering challenges, supported the Keck Institute Affiliates Program for Caltech graduate students and postdocs, and enabled the Caltech Space Challenge, a biennial mission design competition for teams of international students.

Education

Michele Judd earned a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering from Stanford University and later an M.L.A. organizational development from Southern Methodist University.[1][2] She a certified quality manager and is licensed in the state of California as a Petroleum Engineer (P.E.).[3]

Career

During her 15 years with the Keck Institute, Michele supported dozens of engineering and scientific studies, graduate students, and Keck Institute Fellows. Her contributions are acknowledged in research spanning a variety of fields, including astronomy,[4][5] planetary science,[6][7][8] flight dynamics,[9] geochemistry,[10] material engineering,[11] fluid dynamics,[12] terramechanics,[13] satellite remote sensing,[14][15] space structures engineering,[16][17][18] technosignature detection,[19][20] and machine learning.[21]

Prior to joining KISS in 2008, Michele worked in JPL's Engineering and Science Directorate as a project manager. She managed and conducted research on the Onboard Autonomous Science Investigation System (OASIS)[22] for autonomous science with Martian rovers, ServoGrid, Autonomous Exploration for Gathering Increased Science System (AEGIS),[23] and QuakeSim[24] programs. Before joining JPL she managed her own consulting business and from 1988 to 2000 worked as a Strategic Planning Advisor at Mobil Oil.[25]

Awards

In 2011, the AEGIS team received the NASA Software of the Year Award and a NASA Group Achievement Award.[25] In 2009, Asteroid 185641 was renamed "Judd" in honor of her work at JPL.[26]
