The Midland Railway Class 1 2-4-0 was a series of different classes that all shared the same the basic design. They built between 1874 and 1881 by the Midland Railway by Samuel Waite Johnson as a continuation of Matthew Kirtley's design, but also shared features with Johnson's previous 2-4-0 for the Great Eastern Railway. The 2-4-0s were used originally on passenger and later mix traffic work when the 4-4-0s were introduced in 1876. 155 were built in total, with the 1400 class being the highest produced at 60. they were classified 1P in the 1907 renumbering scheme and numbered 1-299. The 2-4-0s, like they're goods counterparts, received Belpaire fireboxes later in they're lives. None have been preserved, but a Kirtley 156 Class, 158A, has.
