"Midnight Rain" is a song by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift and the sixth track from her tenth studio album, Midnights. Written and produced by Swift and Jack Antonoff.

Composition and Lyrics[edit]

"Midnight Rain" mainly incorporates elements from bedroom pop and synth-pop. The song is in the key of C Major and follows a tempo of 140 beats per minute.[1]

The song's lyrics most prominently focus on one of Swift's past relationships, which was terminated by Swift's professional ambition.[2] Swift contrasts the two as "Sunshine" and "Midnight Rain", as each party desires something different from the other, ultimately leading to the two drifting apart.[3]

The opening of the song and the choruses feature a low voice that are actually Taylor Swift's voice pitched down.[2]

Critical reception[edit]

The song received generally positive reviews. Brittany Spanos of Rolling Stone described the track as a "older and more jaded moment of lost love," and the song's protagonist as a "a girl too distracted by her career chase to settle down."[4] Mikael Wood of the Los Angeles Times referred to the song as "a slow and woozy number with pitch-shifted vocals," about "a tale of a guy and a girl with differing life goals."[5]

Elle Muller of The Dartmouth noted that the levels of distortion present in the song contrasted Swift's previous releases; "Swift’s edited vocals in the intro shocked me because the level of distortion and synth was so unlike her previous work," says Muller, "While I can’t say I wholeheartedly enjoyed the edited vocals... I do remember having similar uncertain feelings about how different past releases had been from their predecessors, such as, 'Shake It Off' with 1989’s release and 'Look What You Made Me Do' with Reputation’s release."[6]

In a more mixed review, Ethan Nhek of The News Record mentions the synths as enjoyable, but refers to the rest of the song as "[lacking] that punch," and that "the vocal mixing where her voice is pitched-down just didn't hit the spot for me."[7] In a dual review of Midnights, Callie Ahlgrim and Courtney Laorcca of Insider state their opinions of the song;[8] the former describes the hook of "Midnight Rain" as "a corny combination of words on its own... [expecting] a seasoned songwriter like Swift to serve a double entendre, or some kind of layered metaphor;" the latter states how they "thought the song was uploaded incorrectly or was playing at the wrong speed," and discards it "due to the lack of gripping lyrics and a bridge."
