The Midway Marauders (Indoor Football) were a semi-professional indoor football team that played in Chicago, Illinois before moving to Bloomington, Illinois in 2019. Founded in 2017, the team notably competed in both the Indoor Football Association (IFA) and the Midwest Professional Indoor Football (MPIF).

History[edit]

The Marauders quickly established themselves as a dominant force in indoor football by winning the MPIF championship in their inaugural season. A testament to their prowess on the field, the Marauders succeeded in reaching the playoffs every season they competed.[1]

In 2019, they relocated to Bloomington, Illinois and made the Grossinger Motors Arena their home ground.[2][3] .

Ownership and Management[edit]

The Marauders were the brainchild of Chris Matthews and Tremayne Cheers, and in 2019 Daniel Ryan, a Marine Corps veteran and defensive line coach of the Marauders became owner. Beyond his engagement with the world of indoor football, Ryan is the owner of Dantech in Oak Brook and was Assistant defensive coordinator of the Loyola Ramblers the season prior.

Chris Mathews shouldered the responsibility as the team's General manager (American football). The Marauders were coached by an experienced crew comprising Head coach (American football) Tim Arvanitis, Defensive Coordinator Tremayne Cheers, with the coaching panel also including Anthony Bullock, Ivan Prater, and Hank Williams.

Notable Players[edit]

During their operational years, the Marauders' roster consistently boasted a commendable array of talent. Some of the standout players included:

  • Andre Locke - Quarterback
  • Denzel Whitaker - Wide Receiver
  • Gary Young - Linebacker
  • Carl Young - Linebacker
  • L'Devin Smith - Running Back
  • Andrei Ward - Wide Receiver
  • Mike Miller - Defensive Lineman
  • Reggie Haynes - Defensive Back
  • Aarion Ivy - Linebacker

Demise[edit]

The year 2020 brought unforeseen challenges for many institutions and businesses around the globe. The Marauders were not spared from the upheavals caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Following the introduction of lockdowns and the imposition of social distancing protocols, the Grossinger Motors Arena annulled the contract for its tenants. Faced with this setback, the Midway Marauders made the difficult decision to cease their operations[4][5]

Legacy[edit]

Though their time on the field was relatively brief, the Midway Marauders left an indelible mark on the world of indoor football in Illinois. Their achievements and the memories they created for their fans ensure they will be remembered fondly in the annals of the sport.
