Miguel Guitart is an architect, author, and academic based in the United States. Currently assistant professor at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York,[1] Guitart has taught, practiced, and published in Europe and the United States.[2]

Guitart is known for his scholarship on architectural phenomenology, with a focus on the intersection between material narratives and sensory perception, and questions regarding the contemporary loss of physical context, material memory, and place identity.

Career[edit]

Guitart holds a PhD in Architectural Theory and Design from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid (ETSAM), and a masters degree in Architecture from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University. Guitart was a recipient of a Fulbright Program scholarship program between 2001 and 2003. Guitart has taught at the Universidad de Zaragoza, Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca, and the Boston Architectural College. Since 2014, Guitart has been teaching at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York (SUNY), where he was appointed Assistant Professor in 2020.

He has published peer-review essays internationally, with relevant studies on Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy.[3] This experiential construction of space addresses material boundaries[4] and the intervention of non-material agents, such as light, memory, and tactility.[5]

Guitart is one of the 2022-2023 University at Buffalo Humanities Institute Research Scholar Fellows [6] Guitart's photographic work on material memory was shown in Buffalo, New York, in 2016, as part of the Pecha Kucha Vol. 14 presentations at Hallwalls.[7] [8] His work was discussed in the local newspaper The Buffalo News.[9] His work was part of the architecture section at the Echo Art Fair 2016 in Buffalo, NY.[10]
