Mihailo Srećković (Belgrade, Principality of Serbia, 1843 - Belgrade, Serbia, Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, 1920) was a Serbian army general.

Biography[edit]

Mihailo Srećković was born in 1843 in Belgrade. After graduating from the Military Academy, he received the rank of artillery lieutenant. He then went Prussia to perfect his military knowledge in the Prussian Field artillery. He was one of the many cadets who during the incident at Čukur česma joined the barricades to combat the Turks who were bombing Belgrade.[1]As the commander of the Second Šumadija Battery, Mihailo participated in the First Serbian-Turkish War, where he was promoted to the rank of major. In the Second Serbian-Turkish War, he commanded the Second Smederevo Brigade of the first call. As a professor at the Military Academy, he taught artillery rules, driving, disciplinary ordinance and horseback riding.[2]

Mihailo Srećković became a colonel in 1883. He also participated in the Serbo-Bulgarian war where he was wounded while commanding an infantry regiment. In 1888, he was promoted to the rank of colonel. Until 1894, he performed several responsible duties, from the commander of the Drina divisional area, through the commander of the Belgrade Fortress to the artillery inspector, when he was promoted to the rank of general.[3]

In 1901, he was elected president of the Association of Hunting Associations in the Kingdom of Serbia.

Mihailo Srećković retired three times. The first time was in 1899, in 1900 he was returned to active service as an acting commander. He retired for the second time in 1902 when the Command of the Army was abolished. He soon returned to active service, where he remained until 1906 when he left military service for the third time.

He was an opponent of the Black Hand and the May Coup.

Mihailo Srećković died on 13 September 1920 in Belgrade.[4]

Endowment of Mr. and Mrs. Mihailo Srećković[edit]

Mihailo Srećković wholeheartedly advocated for the Serbian army. As an active and reserve officer, he saw only the reverse of military service, when medals are packed, sabres are hung and stomachs are full of hunger due to the traditionally low salaries of Serbian soldiers and officers. That is why, with his will, he bequeathed his property located at Takovska 12 and 14,[5]for the needs of the fund for helping poor families of active and reserve officers. In 1938, with the funds of the Endowment, a new building was erected on the site of the old one. This building belonged to the Endowment until 1954 when the endowment was closed down and the property nationalized. Today, it houses the premises of the Municipality of Palilula.[6]
