Mikael Olsson (photographer)
Mikael Olsson (born 1969 in Lerum, Sweden) is a Swedish photographer, artist and actor. He is known for his book Södrakull Frösakull[1] with photos of the summer home of modernist designer Bruno Mathsson (Steidl 2011)[2] and collaborations with filmmakers such as Luca Guadagnino, fashion designer Jun Takahashi and author Péter Nádas. Olsson participated in the Venice Architecture Biennale’s Main Exhibition 2018.[3]

Career[edit]
As a student Olsson started a decade long collaboration with Gothenburg Film Festival, resulting in several books for the festival.[4]
He has had numerous solo and group exhibitions, in Sweden and internationally, published two books with Steidl verlag[5]; acted in Palme d'Or winner The Square by Ruben Östlund (2017), Luca Guadagnino's Suspiria (2018)[6] and Isaac Julien's Lessons of the hour (2019).
In 2018 Olsson participated in Venice Architecture Biennale’s Main Exhibition in Giardini.
Amongst his clients are New York Times' T Magazine.[7]
Olsson’s photographs from the set of Suspiria are printed on the collection by Jun Takahashi of Japanese label UNDERCOVER LAB 19AW WOMENS "SUSPIRIUM"[8]

Mikael Olsson investigates ideas about perception and representation, and the reenactment of history and the presence of history in the now.[9]

In on | auf (2020) Mikael Olsson undertakes a photographic interpretation of the Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron’s and the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei’s temporary pavilion at the Serpentine Gallery in London.[10]
Péter Nádas, in the essay ”Loaned Landscapes, Borrowed Objects. The Real Space of the Image and the Representation of Space in Mikael Olsson’s Photography”, writes that the subject in on | auf is ”diffusion itself” rather than the architectural object.[11]
Södrakull Frösakull[edit]
Södrakull Frösakull (2011) comprises a work that is a photographic interpretation of Bruno Mathsson's two private houses.[12]. It is an interplay "between presence and absence", playing with the human gaze.[13]
