Background[edit]
Mike’s Pastry is a popular dessert location founded in the North End in Boston, Massachusetts. Founded in 1946 by Michael Mercogliano, Mike’s Pastry is known for their authentically Italian cannolis, lobster tails and ricotta pies.
Michael Mercogliano moved to the North End when he was 12 years old from Italy. He started working in his cousin’s bakery and found his love for baking. He set out to create the perfect cannoli.[1] Cannolis are a popular Sicilian pastry “consisting of tube-shaped shells of fried pastry dough, filled with a sweet, creaming filling containing ricotta”.
Today, the North End revolves heavily around its tourism, but its deeply rooted ties to the Italian culture provided the ideal location for Mike’s shop. Settled by Italian immigrants in the 1860s, the North End has developed around the traditions of its people. As of 2019 “Italian-Americans still comprise more than 41% of the resident population and Italian remains the language spoken throughout the North End.”[2]
Mike’s Pastry currently has 4 locations. The first store being located on 300 Hanover St. in the North End. They then opened up on 11 Dunster St. in Cambridge and on 445 Revolution Dr. in Somerville. And most recently opened up in TD Garden on 100 Legends Way
Popular Offerings[edit]
Their most popular menu items include a variety of cannoli flavors, lobster tails, and ricotta pies. They also feature a variety of cookies including wedding cookies, champagne cookies and cucidati (fig cookies) and other popular desserts such as Biscottis and Italian macaroons. Their current cannoli flavors include plain, chocolate chip, Florentine, chocolate covered, mint chip pecan caramel, espresso, hazelnut, chocolate ricotta, strawberry, limoncello, peanut butter, Nutella, Oreo, chocolate cream, yellow cream, amaretto, chocolate mousse, and chocolate dipper.
Cannoli Wars[edit]
There is a highly contested debate surrounding many of the best restaurants and bakeries that the North End has to offer. But the most debated is the cannoli war between Mike’s Pastry and Modern Pastry. Modern Pastry is another Italian dessert shop that has been around for generations. Founded by the Picariello family, Modern Pastry has used the same old-world methods for over 150 years. [3]The decision that most have given is that “tourists like Mikes, locals like Modern”.[4] Many reviewers have conducted blind taste tests to determine the true winner. [5] Although debate remains, there is no wrong choice with a fresh cannoli from the North End, Boston.
