Michael Stanley Kemp Stanley OBE, better known as Mike Chattey[4] (born 9 January 1952) has been the Head of Fundraising at the Conservative Party since 2001[5].
In June 2016, Chattey was awarded an OBE in David Cameron’s resignation honours list <ref>https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/politics/1263425/pm-pummelled-by-brexiteers-for-packing-queens-honours-list-full-of-pro-eu-pals/</ref> and received an OBE for “political service”[6] in his role of Head of Fundraising.
Responsibilities
Mike, as Head of Fundraising, has responsibility for the donation and fundraising efforts of the Conservative Party including managing the party’s extensive donor clubs[7] as well as presiding over the annual Tory Party Fundraising Ball [8][9]
Chattey conducts his role of Head of Fundraising from the party’s central office, known as CCHQ [10] in the Treasurer's Department [11].
Early Life and Education
Chattey attended high school at Milton Abbey School in Dorset between 1974 and 1979, before he temporarily moved to the United States of America in order to attend university, for which he moved to North Carolina in order to attend University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the 1980s.
Career
Chattey was a director of the small limited business Consolidated Public Relations Limited in 1997, for a period of just 7 months[12] In 2001, Chattey’s predecessor, Jane Keene, resigned promptly and unexpectedly from her role as Conservative Head of Fundraising. Chattey was promptly appointed, due to his prior experience in corporate finance, including at both Flextech and Citibank[13] Chattey was also the club’s brand manager at Billington Cartmell, meaning he had prior experience of managing donor clubs, making him a suitable applicant for this role.
Controversy
- In October 2015, Chattey came under fire after a Buzzfeed investigation found that the Conservative Party’s fundraising department had accepted over £1.3million from Lycamobile, their biggest corporate donor at the time, ignoring advice from the Conservative Party’s compliance department about “dodgy accounts”[14]
- Mike Chattey was formerly engaged to Charlotte Vere, Baroness Vere of Norbiton[15], who was suspiciously sacked from the Girls' Schools Association [16]
