Mike Garrett (born April 14, 1961 in Washington, DC) is a retired American professional soccer player, coach and current businessman.
In 1979, Garrett graduated in from McLean High School. He then attended George Mason University where he played soccer for two full seasons. He was part of a class of players who, along with Head Coach Richard Broad, lifted the George Mason University team from a low level program to one that was nationally ranked in Division 1 soccer. Midway in his Junior season, with the team unbeaten and ranked in the top ten nationally, he entered the Major Indoor Soccer League draft. He was taken as the 4th pick overall and turned professional in October 1981 after the Memphis Americans of the Major Indoor Soccer League drafted him in the first round.
He played some outdoor professional soccer with the Carolina Lightning and the Buffalo Storm of the United Soccer League.[1]
In 1984, he moved to the Kalamazoo Kangaroos of the American Indoor Soccer Association as a player and assistant coach. He was elevated to head coach midway through the 1985-1986 season. He was able to lead the team to an immediate winning streak and a playoff berth. The team was expected to return for the 3rd season (1986-87) but pulled out of the upcoming season in October 1986. The team intended to return the following season provided the community rallied to save the franchise. But instead, the team officially folded in December 1986 and a few weeks later Garrett moved to the Toledo Pride as a player-coach.[2] Garrett was known as a player for his exceptional skill, ball control and dribbling. As a coach, he led both pro franchises he coached from a last place position when he assumed the job to a spot the playoffs.
He is the founder and of SoccerZone, a company that develops and operates indoor soccer facilities in Michigan and Indiana. The company had Michigan locations in Kalamazoo (Portage and Oshtemo), Lansing, Grand Rapids (Jenison), Grand Blanc, Novi and South Bend (Granger), Indiana.
In 2010, Garrett merged six of the SoccerZone locations into Let's Play (www.letsplaysoccer.com ) and the combined company currently has 24 locations across the country. Garrett is one of the owners, serves on the board for the company and focuses on expansion and finance.
He has also coached for TKO Premier Soccer (www.tkosoccer.org), a Kalamazoo, Michigan, youth soccer club, since 1985. He is married to Tina (Blount) Garrett, formerly of Gordonsville, Va. They have 2 children.
Garret is also founded the NPSL expansion team Kalamazoo FC in 2016. He operated the team for three years before transitioning the ownership to local businessman Dave Shufelt.
