Mike Gibbons (politician)
Mike Gibbons is a Cleveland area businessman. He currently serves as Senior Managing Director at Brown Gibbons Lang and Company of which he is a founder.[1] In 2018 Mike Gibbons ran for U.S. Senate in the State of Ohio. He won 32 counties and finished second to former congressman Jim Renacci.[2]
Early Life and Education[edit]
Mike Gibbons was born in Cleveland and grew up the working-class suburb of Parma, Ohio. His father, Gene Gibbons, was a high school teacher and wrestling coach. Mike played football at St. Ignatius High School and Kenyon College. While at Kenyon College, he earned degrees in political science and economics. Following that, he earned a higher degree in management from Case Western. He later put himself through law school, earning his JD from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law
Business[edit]
Mike Gibbons became a partner at age 27 at McDonald & Company in Cleveland and later became President and Chief Executive Officer of Underwood Nehaus & Company at the age of 35. In 1989, he launched his own company. That company became Brown Gibbons Lang & Company, a national middle-market investment bank[3]. In an industry dominated by big New York and Chicago firms, BGL used its Ohio roots to help dozens of Ohio companies expand and add jobs, providing strategic and financial advice and much-needed capital.
Mike Gibbons has also served as Managing Partner of the Cleveland Crunch professional soccer franchise[4], Co-Owner of Cheboygan Tap & Tool, and Co-Owner of Northern Lake Properties. Mike Gibbons has been honored with numerous awards for his business successes, including Entrepreneur of the Year for northeastern Ohio from Ernst & Young in 2002, along with former partner Scott Lang.[5]
Political[edit]
Mike Gibbons served as Ohio Finance Co-Chair for Donald J. Trump for President in 2016 and donated $100,000 to the campaign[6]. He donated $150,000 to the Trump re-election campaign, part of more than $600,000 in contributions to Republican candidates and causes in the 2020 cycle.[7]
In June of 2017, Mike launched a campaign for U.S. Senate. Starting with zero name identification, he went on to win 38 counties and 33 percent of the vote in the Republican primary against Rep. Jim Renacci[2]. In the 2018 campaign, Mike Gibbons earned the endorsements of Senator Rand Paul, the Tea Party Express, Citizens for Trump, Ohioans for Concealed Carry, and the Franklin, Miami, Clermont, Madison, Defiance, and Knox County Republican Parties. He was endorsed by current State Senate President Matt Huffman, Senator Majority Leader Randy Gardner, State Senator Frank Hoagland, State Senator Jay Hottinger, State Rep. Andy Thompson, Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones, Montgomery County Sheriff and GOP Chair Phil Plummer, and many more elected officials and party leaders.[8]
