Mike Godfrey (businessman)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Mike Godfrey is a tech investor and CEO who is most known for INSINIA Cyber Security.[1] and Smart Plant Systems[2].

Godfrey has appeared in a number of TV productions including the Channel 5 Documentary, “How to Stop Nuisance Calls”.[3]

Cyber security[edit]

In 2018 Godfrey and INSINIA released research explaining how Industrial Control Systems, such as those used on both National Infrastructure and major manufacturing, could be exploited by hackers with a small device and “4 lines of code”[4].

Twitter hack[edit]

Later that year, in December 2018, INSINIA and Godfrey again made the headlines for the alleged “hacking” of celebrity Twitter accounts, including UK television presenters Louis Theroux and Eamonn Holmes[5] [6] [7] [8], among others. Godfrey and INSINIA were widely criticised for the stunt, which was branded "cavalier and unethical". Godfrey maintained that INSINIA had not broken the law and had acted both reasonably and ethically[9]. This attack was apparently made possible by spoofing telephone numbers, a technical vulnerability which Mr. Godfrey claimed was leveraged by using "a text spoofing tool I made in school which is almost 15 years old. It's 2018, this shouldn't be possible". Godfrey had demonstrated this tool to Eamonn Holmes on his TalkRADIO show months before[10]. During the attack, INSINIA claimed it controlled almost 2,000 Twitter accounts. Godfrey provided interviews to a number of news outlets and spoke about the hack at the hacking / security event “DEF CON” in Las Vegas in 2019[11].

Media[edit]

Mike Godfrey and INSINIA have appeared in a number of news outlets including the BBC.[12], Channel 4[13], Channel 5[3], LBC[14], TalkRadio[15], The Daily Mail[16], The Telegraph[17], The Mirror[8] and The Sun[18]

“The Death of the Gods” - Carl Miller - William Heinemann - Acknowledged as “Mike the hacker” on page 371 and appears on page 48 as “a hacker friend” and others as “Mike the hacker at DEF CON”.[19]
