Interim Vice-Chancellor and President, University of Adelaide; computer scientist

Professor Michael John Brooks FTSE FACS is an academic specializing in computer vision and artificial intelligence, and a university senior manager. He is currently the Interim Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Adelaide in South Australia.

Early life and education

Brooks was raised in Nottingham, United Kingdom, and educated at Bilborough Grammar School. He gained a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics from the University of Hull, and an MSc and PhD in Computer Science from the University of Essex.

Career

Brooks moved to South Australia in 1980 to take up a lectureship at Flinders University. In 1984 Brooks accepted a short-term postdoc at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory working with Berthold K.P. Horn.[1][2]

He joined the University of Adelaide in 1991 and subsequently held academic research and leadership roles including Head, School of Computer Science, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) (2008–2019)[3][4] and Provost (2018–2020), with secondment to Interim Vice-Chancellor for extended periods in 2017[5] and 2020.

As Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) he established six of the University of Adelaide's flagship research institutes and oversaw the University’s rise in international rankings.[6][7][8]

Brooks has served on many boards, including the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), the Women’s and Children’s Health Research Institute, and, for almost 10 years, National ICT Australia (NICTA), the forerunner of Data61.

Brooks is former chair of the Group of Eight (Go8) Committee of Deputy Vice-Chancellors Research, and member of the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Code Review Committee, advising on the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research, 2018. He presently chairs the Australian Research Council (ARC) Review of the Excellence in Research for Australia,[9] and previously served for eight years on ARC grant award panels.

Research

Brooks has published over 120 papers in the field of computer vision and image analysis.[10] His research has explored the extraction of 3D shape from a single image of shading,[11][12][13] auto-calibration of a robotic head,[14] parameter estimation,[15] video surveillance,[16] and tracking.[17]

Brooks has held visiting professorships on sabbatical at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Gunma University, the French Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation at Sophia Antipolis, Massey University, and Universidad Polytécnica de Madrid.[citation needed]

Honours and awards

Personal life

Brooks is married with two daughters. He has a special interest in classical music, in particular piano.
