Mike Kennealy is an American business executive and public official who served as the Massachusetts Secretary of Housing and Economic Development under Governor Charlie Baker. Before his public service, he had a successful career in private equity and business development.

Early Life and Education

Kennealy earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government from Dartmouth College and later obtained a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School.

Career

Private Sector

Kennealy began his career in private equity at TA Associates, a Boston-based investment firm. In 1997, he joined Spectrum Equity, a private equity firm with offices in Boston and San Francisco. During his tenure of over 15 years, he contributed to the firm’s growth, helping it manage nearly $5 billion in assets and invest in over 100 companies in sectors including internet, software, and information services.

After leaving private equity, Kennealy worked as a Special Advisor to the Receiver at Lawrence Public Schools, where he assisted the state-appointed superintendent in implementing strategic and financial initiatives to support the district’s turnaround plan.

Public Service

In 2015, Kennealy joined the Baker-Polito Administration as Assistant Secretary for Business Growth. In this role, he played a key part in advancing the administration’s job creation and business development strategies across Massachusetts. He also co-chaired the board of the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center.

In 2019, Kennealy was appointed Massachusetts Secretary of Housing and Economic Development, where he led efforts to support business growth, job creation, and housing development across the state. His tenure focused on economic investments, public-private partnerships, and community development initiatives.

Community Involvement

Kennealy and his family reside in Lexington, Massachusetts, where he has been active in local government, education, and youth sports. He has served on the Board of Trustees of St. John’s Prep in Danvers since 2009 and is currently its Chairman. He is also a member of the Board of Visitors for the Nelson A. Rockefeller Center for Public Policy and the Social Sciences at Dartmouth College.

Potential Gubernatorial Run

In January 2025, the Boston Herald reported that Kennealy is considering a run for Governor of Massachusetts in the 2026 Massachusetts gubernatorial election.[1]
