Mike Rakes
Dr. Mike Rakes is the current and fifth president.[1] of Evangel University[2] located in Springfield, Missouri. In July of 2021, Dr. Rakes was unanimously voted by Evangel’s Board of Trustees and elected as president of the university[3]. Before his time at Evangel, Dr. Rakes and his wife, Darla, pastored Winston Salem First Church in Winston Salem, North Carolina. They began leading this congregation in 2006 and continued until 2021, when they stepped into the presidential office.
Prior to his role at Evangel, Rakes served in a variety of higher education leadership roles. He founded Bridges Christian College[4] in 2009. The college, accredited by the Association for Biblical Higher Education, was established to prepare students for full-time ministry and as a precursor to seminary education. Through this college, students were able to graduate without any debt. Dr. Rakes served as the president until 2012.
Rakes also served as vice president for student development at Southeastern University. This Assemblies of God institution is located in Lakeland, Florida. Rakes served as vice president from 2000–2006. From 1993–1999, Rakes served as chair of its Practical Ministry Department. Rakes received his ministerial credentials through the Assemblies of God and has also held the titles of pastor, church planter, consultant, and curriculum writer.
Rakes graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Pastoral Ministries from Central Bible College and a master’s degree in Biblical Literature from the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary[5]. He also holds a Master of Divinity and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Biola University. In his time there, he completed additional doctoral studies in management. Rakes previously served as chair of the board of trustees at Oral Roberts University[6]
Among his other titles, Rakes is also a published author. His most recent book, published through the FEDD Agency, “Surrendered and Unafraid: The Flourishing of Faith during Seasons of Suffering,” was released in the fall of 2021. His first book, “Slings and Stones” was published in 2015 by Charisma House.
Rakes and his wife, Darla, have two children, Whitney, and Brayden. Their daughter, Whitney, passed away in 2019 from a rare form of blood cancer. Rakes also has two grandchildren, Blake and Beau, by his son, Brayden, and wife, Heather.
