Mike Retter (born 1984) is an Australian film director, producer and visual artist who works predominantly from Adelaide. His debut feature film Stanley's Mouth premiered at the Adelaide Film Festival in 2015.[1] He is known for his passionate advocacy for independent cinema through his Port Film Co-Op [2] His 2017 Youth on the March was described in the ABC Radio National as “a film that is talking to avante-garde cinema now, digital cinema”, Youth on the March experiments with a vertical aspect ratio and immerses its viewer in contemporary youth culture.[3]

Career[edit]

Mike Retter was raised in Yankalilla, South Australia, before relocating to Port Adelaide in his early adulthood. This reigon has had a profound impact on his on his body of work, and his is passionate advocate for local filmmaking has brought interest into reigonal filmmaking in recent years[4] His feature film Youth on the March used local actors and non-actors and premiered at the 2017 Adelaide Film Festival to positive reviews, in particular praising the unconvential vertical aspect ratio of 9:16 [5]

9:16 Vertical Cinema Movement[edit]

Run with film producer and critic Chris Luscri the program makes a hybrid of the art gallery aesthetic bringing a new distinct view to digital projection. [7] “It’s another way of framing stories,” said Adelaide Film Festival director Amanda Duthie in an article of Adelaide Now[8]
