Mike Shampine is an American military and commercial pilot, and a freelance artist known for his aviation-themed illustrations. He serves as a C-17 Globemaster III commander in the United States Air Force Reserve and is a commercial pilot with Delta Air Lines. Shampine is also the founder of Airborne Art, a creative venture producing vintage-style aviation artwork inspired by nose art and World War II propaganda posters.

Early life and education

Shampine developed an early interest in both aviation and art. His parents were artists, and his father frequently drew for him during childhood. His passion for flying began after an introductory flight in a Cessna 172 with his uncle. Shampine earned an art degree in college, which later qualified him for pilot training in the United States Air Force, which accepts a wide range of academic backgrounds for its pilot candidates.[1]

Aviation career

After college, Shampine entered the U.S. Air Force and trained as a pilot. He currently serves as a C-17 Globemaster III commander in the Air Force Reserve. In parallel, he works as a commercial airline pilot for Delta Air Lines, flying the Boeing 717. Shampine has noted that both the C-17 and 717 share design origins with McDonnell Douglas, which helps ease the transition between his military and civilian flying roles.[1]

Artistic career

Shampine's artwork is influenced by mid-20th-century military aesthetics, including aircraft nose art and propaganda posters from World War II. He began drawing personalized caricatures and pin-up-style aircraft illustrations for fellow service members, eventually founding Airborne Art to expand his reach. Through Airborne Art, he sells prints and commissions at airshows and online marketplaces such as Etsy and ArtStation.[1][2][3]
