The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21I Analog (Russian: Микоян-Гуревич МиГ-21и Аналог; also know as the A-144 and 21-11) was a Soviet experimental aircraft modified from the MiG-21 airframe. It was developed as a technology test-bed for the wing design of the Tupolev Tu-144.
Design and development[edit]
As the design of the Tu-144 was progressing, a delta wing design was chosen. However, engineers were unsure whether a "pure delta" (no tailplane) design was viable, or whether it was necessary to keep an horizontal stabilizer, which would have resulted in an aerodynamic design reminiscent of the MiG-21. The experience on supersonic delta wing design was limited, and so were supersonic wind tunnel testing capabilities. Thus, it was decided to modify an existing Mach 2 capable aircraft, specifically a MiG-21 fighter, to fly-test a scale model of Tu-144's wing design, in the proposed tailless configuration, in all flight regimes.[1][2]
This project parallels the British BAC 221, which was a modified Fairey Delta 2 manufactured to flight-test a scale model of the Concorde wing design.
Two prototypes were built from MiG-21 aiframes, with slight design variations, mostly regarding slats. The wing is a 30% scale version of the Tu-144's wing. The first flight occurred in 1968, followed by an extensive flight test program. As low-speed manoeuvrability was improved compared to the regular MiG-21 design, it was considered to reuse this aerodynamic condiguration for a ground-attack aircraft. However, the MiG-27 design, featuring variable-geometry wings, was selected instead.[3]
Aircraft on display[edit]
One of the two Mig-21Is is preserved at Monino Central Air Force museum. It is displayed next to a Tupolev-144.[4]
