Milan Pekař
Milan Pekař is a ceramic designer and assistant professor at Studio of Ceramics and Porcelain Academy of Arts.[1] He is considered as one of the most important makers in the field of contemporary Czech ceramics and porcelain.[2]
Biography[edit]
He was born in Prague, where he graduated from the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague in 2006.[3]
Design[edit]
In 2009 he founded his own Milan Pekař Studio in Prague, where he specializes in the production of porcelain vases. Over the past four years, Pekař has been involved in the creation of so-called crystalline glazes. On its way to the new colour glaze, he created metallic crystalline glazes that are unique in today's world. Although the technique of crystalline glazes is not new, Pekař's method differs mainly because the colour combinations he has created and the designs he uses on his vases make the colours look special.[4]
Crystalline glaze[edit]
The mixture of ceramic glazing ingredients is applied to a vase and fired at high temperatures. By changing the extremely high and low temperature, or by keeping it for several hours, crystals form on the surface of the vase. In short, an artificial environment for the growth of crystals, which otherwise would grow on a similar material for several thousand years, is created.
During this demanding process and subsequent drying some vases crack, thus suffering mainly larger vases, where the probability of disturbing their surface is greater. Another interesting fact about crystalline glaze is that crystals grow spontaneously in different sizes, shapes, react to different oxides and ingredients differently - that is why such a crystal vase is really unique. There will never be two identical.[5]
