Milap

Formerly known as Milapfest, Milap is Britain's leading Indian arts and culture development trust having produced various performances, education and artist development opportunities.[1][2]

Their aim is to "inspire, educate and entertain people of all backgrounds through Indian Arts".[1] Their work includes art schools and workshops, as well as performances across Liverpool, Manchester and London. Notable work includes Indika Festival and the Music for the Mind and Soul series.[3]

History[edit]

The organisation was formed in 1985, having achieved charitable status in the early 1990s. In 2015, Milap established the UK's National Indian Arts Awards.[4]

It is based in Liverpool at the Capstone Building at Liverpool Hope University.

Past performers have included Pandit Ravi Shanker, Ustad Zakir Hussain and Abida Parveen.

Ensembles[edit]

  • Samyo (National Youth Orchestra for Indian Music)

Samyo celebrated its 10 year anniversary in 2012, having become one of eight organisations to be awarded National Youth Music Organisation status by Arts Council England.

  • Samyo Too (the Ensemble for Young Maestros)
  • Sabrang (the National Choir for Indian Music)

The first tutor of The SAMYO Choir was Bombay Jayashri, teaching at Music India in 2010 and 2011.

  • Tarang (the Ensemble for Young Professionals)

Tarang was founded in 2004 for young musicians trained in Indian music who did not have the platform to advance their professional skills. In 2006, the first national auditions recruited a team of musicians from the North and South Indian music traditions with leadership from musicologist Manorama Prasad.

In 2009, the ensemble released their first CD, followed by their first tour.
