Miles Curtis Sesselmann (born 16 January 1995), known by his stage name Mileo (/ˈmaɪloʊ/ MY-loh), is a Norwegian-Australian singer, songwriter and recording artist of Asian and Norwegian descent.[1]
Early life
Mileo was born in Sydney, Australia.[citation needed] His father was born in Oslo, Norway and his mother is from Sydney, Australia.[citation needed] He has stated that when he was younger, his family lived between Oslo and Sydney.[2] Mileo began singing at a young age, and taught himself piano.[citation needed] He began songwriting and later producing.[3] Mileo attended a music school where he was taught classical and pop music.[citation needed]
Career
In early 2013, Mileo signed with Sony Music Entertainment.[4] Mileo released his debut single "Echo" on 11 February 2014, which was co-produced by a Norwegian producer Thomas Eriksen.[5] NRJ officially premiered the single "Echo" to radio late February.[citation needed]
"Know You Better" was released on 8 April 2016, the song went viral debuting on the Billboard "Spotify Viral 50" at number 16, and charting in the top 10 on multiple countries’ viral streaming charts, while reaching top position on the Hype Machine "Most Popular Tracks On Twitter".[6]
On 17 March 2017, Mileo released "Worry" featuring Adelén. It became Mileo's first national charting song.[where?][7]
Mileo later released the single "Dead", featuring the rap duo Madcon.[8]
In January 2024, it was announced that he would participate in Melodi Grand Prix 2024, the Norwegian pre-selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, with the song "You're Mine".[9][10] He participated in the second semi-final, failing to qualify for the final.[11]
Controversy
After the presentation of the artists participating in MGP 2024, Mileo's single "You're Mine" came under fire due to its lyrical content being described as "violent", under the backdrop of a recent wave of partner-killing in Oslo. Sesselmann had stated the song was written a year prior and that "Mileo" is a "fictional villain character", claiming he does not condone or encourage people to act out the lyrics in real life.[12]
Personal life
Mileo performed at Sydney's Mardi Gras festival in 2022 with a previous collaborator Wasteland.[13] According to an interview with radio station NRK MP3, Mileo knows how to speak some Norwegian but prefers English.[14]
