Milne Dam Conservation Park (alternatively known as Milne Dam Park or Milne Dam Conservation Area) is the largest park in the City of Markham.[1] It consists of 123 hectares (305 acres) of forest land, park and trails, with the Rouge River cutting through the heart of the Conservation Area.[2] It is located on the Eastern Side of McCowan Road, south of Highway 7. The Park is a popular spot for families in Markham. There are 23 kilometres of hiking trails as well as a beach area.[3][4] Every year, on July 1st (Canada Day), the Park hosts a popular fireworks show.[5]

History[edit]

For thousands of years, Indigenous people have inhabited the area that is now the Milne Dam Conservation Park. This included the Senecas of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the Petun, the Huron Wendat and the Neutral nations.[6] Archaeological evidence from the Milne Dam Conservation Park indicates that there was a settlement within the boundaries of the Park.[7]

The Park was named after the Milne family, who operated a mill near the present dam in the 1820's.[8] The mill was operated by Peter and Alexander Milne, and by 1845, had expanded to include a general store, fueling and wool mill and an ashery.[9] The area was home to the first concrete and steel dam in Canada, built by a later descendant, Archie Milne, in 1911.[10]

In the 1950's, the Metropolitan Toronto and Region Conservation Authority purchased the plot of land and designated it the Milne Dam Conservation Area.[11]
