Myoui Mina (Japanese:名井 南/みょうい みな Myōi Mina; English:Mina Sharon Myoui[1]; born March 24. 1997), commonly known mononymously by her stage name, Mina (Hangul:미나,Japanese:ミナ), is a Japanese-American[2][3] singer, dancer and model based in South Korea and a member of the K-pop idol girl group Twice, under JYP Entertainment.

Early Life[edit]

Mina Myoui was born in San Antonio, Texas, USA on March 24, 1997[1] and grew up in Nishinomiya, Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan. She holds dual-citizenship, being both a Japanese and an American citizen simultaneously[2][3]. Her father, Akira Myoui(名井陽)[1][4], is an Orthopedics Professor of Osaka University. Her mother is Sachiko Terao[1]. Mina has an elder brother named Kai Myoui(名井海)[5], who is five years older than her, and used to study in the United States[6]. When Mina was one years old, her father was appointed Orthopedics Professor of Osaka University. Her family then moved back to Japan and settled in Nishinomiya, Hyōgo Prefecture.

In high school, Mina became interested in K-pop, with Girl's Generation's Genie being the first song to capture her attention. She used to practice Genie's choreography with her friends. Prior to joining Urizip Dance Academy to learn contemporary dance genres[7], she practiced ballet for eleven years.[3][8][3]

She was scouted by JYP entertainment's talent hunters while shopping at Umeda, Osaka with her mom[n 1]. She used to study at Obayashi Sacred Heart School. She then departed for South Korea to begin her journey towards K-pop idol by becoming a trainee under JYP.[9]

Debut and Career[edit]

On the last day of JYPe's global audition back in 2013, she was scouted by JYP entertainment's talent hunters while shopping at Umeda, Osaka. She passed her audition by singing Utada Hikaru’s First Love and became JYPe’s trainee officially on January 2, 2014. On 2015, Mina partook South Korean Reality TV Show Sixteen hosted by JYPe, co-produced by Mnet to grab one of the 7 spots(additional 2 spots at final Sixteen episode) for JYPe’s then upcoming girl-group. Mina was the 10th contestant to be revealed[10]. In the final mission of Sixteen, Mina was ranked 4th ultimately securing one of the nine spots and successfully debuted as one of the nine members of Twice. Her training duration is the shortest among Twice members.

On October 20, 2015, Mina officially debuted as a member of Twice, releasing their first EP, "The Story Begins", with "Like Ooh-Ahh" being the hit single.[11]

On 15th January 2016, Mina appeared in Twice Melody Project and became the first Twice member to release a cover song[12].

Mina contended in 3 consecutive MBC Idol Star Athletics in the past, from 11th to 13th. On 11th ISAC, Mina and Dahyun contented in the archery leg representing "Team Beat to the end" (consists of BTS, GOT7, Twice and Bestie). Her opponent for archery was CLC's SeungYeon. She fell short to her by 9:10 in the last run. On 12th iteration of ISAC on September 2016, Mina partook the first ever ISAC rhythmic gymnastics competition. She scored 9.8 and ranked 6th due to mistakes. In order to prep herself for the recordings of the 2nd ISAC rhythmic gymnastics competition, Mina did not go back to Japan for coming-of-age ceremony. She scored 12.25 points (Difficulty:4.05, Execution:8.05, Deduction:0) and tied for Gold medal with Fiestar's Cao Lu.

In August 2016, Mina appeared on reality TV show, Hit The Stage as partner for her fellow member Momo.
