A mini-SUV refers to the smallest class of the SUV segment. It can also be referred to as micro-SUV. Mini-SUVs are usually front-wheel drive as mini-SUVs are mostly used to get around the city instead of being rugged off-roaders that can take on all terrains. Mini-SUVs are also referred to as city cars or subcompact cars, but should be referred to as mini-SUVs or micro-SUV due to their higher ground clearance and SUV styling.
India[edit]
Mini-SUVs were introduced to the Indian market in 2009, with the launch of the Premier Rio (rebadged Zotye 2008). Then the Renault Kwid came to India in 2015, followed by 2 rivals, the Mahindra KUV100 and the Maruti S-Presso in 2016 and 2019 respectively. In India, Mini-SUVs in India are under 4 meters in length, in order to attract lower excise duty.[1]
Japan[edit]
In Japan, most, if not all, mini-SUVs fall under the kei car class, due to their dimensions that attract lower taxes. Japanese mini-SUVs consist of vehicles such as the Mitsubishi Pajero Mini and the Suzuki Jimny.
Platforms[edit]
Mini-SUVs are usually get their platforms from their equivalent A-segment or B-segment hatchback siblings; for example, the Suzuki S-Presso gets its HEARTECT K platform from the B-segment Swift hatchback and its sedan sibling the Dzire, both of which are B-segment cars. The Renault Kwid gets its CMF-A platform from the A-segment Datsun Redi-Go. Some people prefer to classify mini-SUVs as city cars or subcompact cars, but should be classified as mini-SUVs due to their high ground clearance and SUV styling.
