Neelotpal Lahkar (Assamese: নীলোৎপল লহকৰ), professionally known as Minimi or Minimi NL is an Indian Rapper, Singer, and Actor who hails from Nalbari, Assam, India.[1][2]

Early life and education

Minimi was born on June 11, 1995, and hails from a small village called Pandula, in Nalbari district. His father, Prabindra Chandra Lahkar is a retired government employee and mother Anu Lahkar is a homemaker.

Minimi's musical journey began at the age of 12 when he started taking classical music classes. As a child artist, he performed in local programs. He completed his schooling from Sankardev Vidya Niketan in Barbhag, Nalbari, in 2012. He then pursued higher studies at B. Borooah College, Guwahati.

Career

He garnered success with the release of his singles during the summer of 2016.[3] His notable works include singles such as "Awahon" (2016), "Rapkap" (2015), "Gom Pabi Roh - Gucci Gang Remix" (2018), and other singles. "RapKap" was his debut track. He later released "Bangladeshi", a protest rap in support of the Anti-CAA movement, which instantly went viral in the state during late 2018. However, it also attracted controversy for being overtly xenophobic.[4]

Later on, he ventured into working on Assamese feature films and web series, notably including "Kaaneen," "Burbokor Khel," "Black & White,"[5] "Rajneeti," and "Kolongpaar," among others. Throughout his career, he has consistently released singles, and he is currently working on his upcoming EP titled "Oprotirodhyo".[6] [7][8]

In the movie "Burbokor Khel", he debuted as a music director. Along with Nishant Ramteke and Kaysee, he composed 4 songs for the EP. He also played a character and appeared in an extended cameo for the film.[9]

In the year 2020, Minimi collaborated with an NGO for a UNICEF-driven project focused on discussing children's mental health.[10]

In 2022, Minimi worked in collaboration with Recovery Wellness Society and Govt. Of Assam, for an awareness song discussing drug abuse and its impact on the youth. The song has been widely used in various addiction awareness programmes.[11]

Controversy

During the Anti-CAA movement in Assam, numerous artists took to the streets to participate in peaceful protests. However, a handful of individuals, including Minimi, chanted lyrics from his song "Bangladeshi," which were deemed xenophobic and violent. This sparked a wave of controversy throughout the state, leading the authorities to ban the song from streaming or public play. Eventually, as tensions subsided, the ban on the song was lifted.[4][14]
