Minnesota Virtual Academy (MNVA) is a public virtual school that serves grades K to 12 in the state of Minnesota.[2]

History

Minnesota Virtual Academy was founded in 2001 with classes beginning the following year.[3][4] In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, MNVA, along with two other virtual schools, saw a combined 55% increase in enrollment from the previous year due to increased demand for virtual learning.[5] In July 2022, a crisis plan, new staff and student handbook, and an extra-curricular position of student council advisor were added to the school.[6][7]

Lawsuit

In 2003, after MNVA was approved by the Minnesota Department of Education, the state teachers' union along with two other suburban school districts filed a lawsuit against the Minnesota Department of Education claiming that the teachers and curriculum were not state certified and therefore could not claim the state’s homeschool subsidy.[8] The outcome of this lawsuit is unclear.
