Miraheze is a free, ad-free wiki hosting service and wiki farm powered by MediaWiki. It is operated by the WikiTide Foundation, a United States-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.[1] As of early 2026, Miraheze hosts over 22,000 wikis, supports more than 60,000 wiki requests, and has over 680,000 registered users, with funding provided entirely through community donations.[2]
History
Miraheze was founded in July 2015 by John Lewis and Ferran Tufan (also known as Southparkfan). It was named after two Wikimedia Foundation servers, "mira" and "heze".[3] The project launched as a community-driven alternative shortly after the shutdown of the Orain wiki farm due to a cyberattack, with many affected wikis migrating to Miraheze.[3]
In late 2023, following an internal dispute, a temporary fork called WikiTide was created. The projects merged back in early 2024 (with governance transfer to the WikiTide Foundation effective January 6, 2024, and completion around March 2024), retaining the Miraheze name after community feedback opposed a proposed rename.[4]
Features
Miraheze provides MediaWiki version 1.45.1 (with automatic upgrades to the latest stable release) and supports over 300 extensions and skins, including VisualEditor and options for Semantic MediaWiki. Administrators have self-service tools via the ManageWiki extension to configure settings, enable extensions, set custom domains, and manage permissions. Wikis are ad-free by policy and emphasize community governance.[5][6]
