Mirka Ltd (finnish: Mirka Oy, swedish: Mirka Ab; formerly KWH Mirka until 2016) is a Finnish manufacturer of abrasives, sanding tools and surface-finishing systems. Founded in 1943 by engineer Onni Aulo, the company is headquartered in Jeppo, Ostrobothnia, Finland. Mirka operates as the biggest member of the KWH Group and has subsidiaries in more than 20 countries across Europe, the Middle East, North and South America, and Asia.[2]
The company's revenue was €412 million in 2025.[1]
Operations
Mirka develops and manufactures abrasives and related products for professional surface finishing. Its product portfolio includes abrasive nets, sandpaper, abrasive cloth, foam abrasives, non-woven abrasives, sanding and polishing machines, and polishing compounds.[3]
The company's products are used in industries such as automotive manufacturing and refinishing, woodworking and furniture production, composite manufacturing, and metalworking.[3]
Mirka's Finnish production facilities are located in Jeppo, Oravais, Jakobstad, Nurmijärvi and Karis. The company also operates manufacturing facilities in Belgium, Germany, Italy and the United States.[1][4]
The raw material used in Mirka's net abrasives is manufactured at the company's facility in Karis, Finland.[5]
According to the company, approximately 80 percent of the components used in Mirka's products are sourced from Finland.[5] A significant share of the company's production is exported to international markets.[1]
In February 2024, Mirka relocated its power tools production to a new factory in Jakobstad. According to the company, Mirka is the first and only manufacturer of dust extractors in Finland. [6]
History
Mirka was founded in Helsinki in 1943 by engineer Onni Aulo. Due to wartime conditions and technical challenges, production did not begin until January 1946. The company relocated to Jeppo in 1962 and was acquired by Oy Keppo Ab in 1966. The two companies merged in 1973 and the new production factory in Jeppo opened.[2] Part of Mirka's production was transferred to Oravais in 1977. The Oravais facility has been expanded several times. The Jeppo facility has also undergone several expansion phases since 1979.[7]
In 1979, Mirka established its first foreign subsidiary, Mirka Abrasives Ltd, in the United Kingdom.[2]
In 1985, Mirka received the President of Finland's Export Award in recognition of the company's successful international export activities.[8]
In 1995, the company patented Abralon, a foam-based abrasive material that received the InnoFinland Award the same year.[7][9]
In 2000, Mirka introduced Abranet, a net-based abrasive designed for dust-free sanding.[7][10]
Mirka Scandinavia and Mirka Canada were established as subsidiaries in 2009.
In 2009 Mirka introduced its first power tool, the CEROS random orbital sander. It was the first sander to feature a brushless electric motor.[11]
Mirka acquired the Italian company Cafro, in 2017, a manufacturer of diamond and cubic boron nitride tools, as part of its strategy to expand its precision grinding and diamond solutions business.[12]
In 2022, Mirka acquired 100% of the shares of the Finnish robotics company Flexmill, a specialist in automated surface-finishing applications. [13]
In May 2025 Mirka opened its first production facility outside Europe, in Indiana, United States.[14]
Products and innovations
Abralon is a foam-based abrasive material patented by Mirka in 1995.[7] The product received the InnoFinland Award in the same year.[2][9]
Abranet is a net-based abrasive introduced in 2000.[7] Unlike traditional abrasives with paper or film backing, Abranet uses an open mesh structure that enables efficient dust extraction during sanding.[10]
Since 2009, Mirka has also developed and manufactured electric sanding and polishing tools for professional use.[5] In 2018, Mirka's LEROS wall and ceiling sander received the Red Dot: Best of the Best award for product design.[15][2]
Ownership
Mirka is part of the KWH Group, a Finnish family-owned industrial group.[16][11] In 2016, KWH Group was named Family Business of the Year by the Finnish Federation of Family Businesses.[17]
