1973 Designation
In 1973, in the middle of a Military Revolution and a Dictatorship period, the Miss Peru Pageant was banned by the Peruvian Army General Juan Velasco Alvarado and Elizabeth Ardilla as President of the Feminist Majority National Group.
Although 3 National Queens were chosen that year: Mary Núñez Bartra, who was appointed to represent Peru in Miss World 1973 Pageant [1] and crowned by a group of Peruvian refugees in Venezuela.
Meanwhile, Marianella Chávez was chosen by votes of readers of GENTE Magazine and crowned by the Directors of the same Magazine. (GENTE Magazine was the official sponsor of the Miss Peru Pageant from 1970 to 1993, many people consider Marianella as the Miss Peru 1973.[2]
And finally, Ana Cecilia Schuler was crowned National Queen of Work, a new contest similar to "The Miss America Pageant" and rewards the winners with scholarships for college and graduate school to Peruvian women, based on Talent, Work Skills besides Beauty.
