Miss Tahloulah May (Paramaribo, September 16th 1986) is a Dutch modular synthesist, composer, sound designer and music producer.

Alongside artists like Sofi Tucker and !LLMIND she produced presets for Native Instruments’ Community Drive 2021.[1]

Biography[edit]

In November 2020 she was a guest speaker along with Nightmares on Wax in King Britt’s Blacktronika: Afrofuturism In Electronic Music course (University of California San Diego).[2]She also was a guest speaker in Nicole Mitchell’s music composition class (University of Pittsburgh). [3]

On November 6th 2020 Miss Tahloulah May released her album Rugged. Wordplay Magazine wrote that this album is an ode to the authenticity and creativity that Hip Hop has brought us all these years. Wordplay called it a tribute to J Dilla and RZA.[4]

Miss Tahloulah May is known for producing music without a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). Mostly she records into the Roland SP-404. This sampler functions like the brain of her studio.[5]

On April 4th 2021 Miss Tahloulah May was part of Roland Corporation’s 404DAY SP Takeover. Alongside artists like Dibiase, she performed a beat set on Roland’s social media platforms.[6]

During the COVID-19 lockdowns Miss Tahloulah May made a (visual) radioshow which was broadcasted on the British online radiostation Run Dem Radio (founded by Charlie Dark, Run Dem Crew) in 2020.[7]

Her intention with the radio show was to provide a platform for underground and independent artists during the COVID-19 crisis.[3]

On September 16th 2021 Miss Tahloulah May celebrated her 35th birthday as a guest at Native Instrument’s online series, Real Talk. She spoke about being one of the judges at the Metapop X Native Instruments beatmaking competition amongst other things.[8]

In an article about the combination between Hip Hop and modular synthesizers on Reverb.com Miss Tahloulah May is interviewed about her vision, modular set-up and workflow. MTM said that the semi-modular Moog Grandmother along with the Moog Sound Studio 3 Mother-32 were her initial modular pieces. MTM's modular system has grown since then and consists of the Winter Modular’s Eloquencer and the Making Sound Machines Stolperbeats for drums. For melodies and baselines she uses Intellijel's Metropolix.[9]

Early life[edit]

Miss Tahloulah May was inspired musically by her mother from a young age. That's how her love for Soul, Funk, Jazz, Kaseko and Caribbean music developed.[4]
