Mission of Mercy
The 'Mission of Mercy' [1] is rescue flight mission operated by SriLankan Airlines on 30th January, 2020. The mission was carried out on the instruction of Excellency Gotabaya Rajapaksa, President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. The mission is a evacuation operation to bring back 33 Sri Lankan citizens who are stranded in the lock down of Wuhan Province, China due to COVID-19 pandemic. The Mission was operated by Flight UL 1422/1423 with 16-member crew of SriLankan Airlines which lasted more than twenty hours of extremely long turnaround flight from Colombo to Wuhan and back. The Country, The President, The People and The company SriLankan Airlines expresses gratitude to its courageous crew members and staff who volunteered to fly into Wuhan. [2]
Another noble act from crew is they refused all the incentives paid for that said flight duty. The entire crew of SriLankan flight UL 1422/23 that volunteered to operate the Wuhan flight have decided to decline all the flight allowances paid for the said duty period respectfully. Also the crew requested the company authorities to use those funding to buy masks, gloves, and other personal protective items for the SriLankan Airlines staff engaged in ground handling in Bandaranyake International Airport [3].
Crews[edit]
The brave team of 16 crew members who volunteered to fly into Wuhan are led by Chief Pilot Captain Chaminda De Soyza. Thereby Captian Anushka Jeewantha, Co-pilot Shehan Seneviratne, and Ravin Ranatunga are the other Flight Crew. The Cabin was led by Cabin Manager Farhaan Haniffa and the rest of the Team are Cabin Services Supervisors Chaminda Perera, Jenaly Jansz Cabin Crew Members Amali Hettiarachchi, Waseem Rahumath, Danindu Dunusinghe, Dinuk Madurepperuma and Koshan Fernando. Aircraft Engineer Lilantha Pathberiya, Aircraft Technician Rumesh Pathiraja, Senior Load Control Supervisor Darshana Yapa and Flight Dispatch Officer Malisha Prasad also part of this brave team who will go down as 'National Heroes of Srilanka' in the History.
