Mitu Monteiro is a Cape-Verdean professional waterman.

He is internationally recognized as the pioneer of strapless kitesurfing.

Bio[edit]

Born on the 7 of July 1983 in Santa Maria, Sal island, Cabo Verde, Mitu's remarkable talent and dedication have earned him international recognition as one of the most influential figures in kitesurfing.

He’s one of the most complete, and experienced, waveriders in the world but he’s also the man who originally brought strapless freestyle to the fore.

Thanks to his extraordinary contributions to the sport, in June 2023 Mitu Monteiro received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Qatar Airways GKA Award Ceremony in Tarifa.

In 2008 he won his first Kitesurfing Wave World Championship in Morocco.

After trying to kitesurf thanks to an European friend who borrow him his gear, Mitu suddenly fell in love with it but, due to the lack of money, he started kiting using his old surf board with no straps. That old piece of wood made his fortune.

In 2015 Mitu carried out a lifetime challenge sponsored by Red Bull: he completed a solo kitesurfing crossing of the Archipelago of Cabo Verde covering 740 kilometers.

In 2019 he decided to stop competing to dedicate time to travel in the best kite spots for coaching.

In March 2023 he returned to competitions at his native spot Ponta Preta break just ahead of his 40th birthday. After a four-year absence, he defeated 26 riders younger than him to finish second.

In January 2023 he is called as a speaker at The Ocean Race Summit in Sao Vicente in which took part the Secretary-General of United Nation Mr. António Guterres, to talk about sport and sustainability.

Family[edit]

Mitu and his wife Nicole have three sons: Michael Jorge, Matthew and Malakai. They are a family of ocean lovers that live between Cabo Verde, Brasil and Italy.

Michael is following his father's footsteps and, at only 8 joined the Italian Surfing Team in 2020.

In October 2022 he won the Italian Championship Under 12. In 2023 he won the Italian Championship Under 12.
