Mlapa III
Mlapa III was a king of what is now Togo. He reigned under the explorer Gustav Nachtigal under the German Protectorate of Togoland.
Biography
He was the son of King Agomega; his real name was Plakoo. His nickname was derived from the phrase "Mlapa Etu ne Mlapa, ewui ne Mlapa", roughly translating to "invincibility to the gun and knife". His nickname explains why some people believed he was a different person.
Before his reign, the King controlled the territory surrounding Lake Togo. Under his rule, he had the right to levy taxes, both for the King and the palace.
He was a warlord who led his troops to battle in the field. His son, Mlapa IV, was among the traditional authorities consulted after the succession of the traditional chief Vogan on August 23, 1951. His dynasty is represented by his grandson, Mlapa V; the crown prince is named Asrafo Plakoo Mlapa.
