Format[edit]
MPL has 3 phases, the first phase is the Online Qualifiers. Teams are sorted into 2 group, the top 1 team in this 2 groups in the qualifiers will get 2 direct spots for the MPL. The second phase is the Regular Season, every team will battle against each other for 6-10 weeks. By the end of the Regular Season, the first 4 teams will be placed in the Upper Bracket while the 4 other teams are placed in the Lower Bracket, the 2 bottom teams will be eliminated and will not receive a share in the prize pool. The third and final phase is the playoffs. Teams that are defeated in the Upper Bracket will be demoted to the Lower Bracket while defeated teams in the Lower Bracket will be eliminated. One finalist from each bracket will battle for the trophy and the championship title.
MPL also serves as the basis of qualification for teams who will participate in the International Tournaments hosted by Moonton. The champion and runner-up usually participates in this International Tournaments.
However, in MPL-PH S6, a new format has been proposed in which all 10 teams are sorted into 2 groups, each team will play 2 Bo3 matches with the other 4 teams in their group and play 1 Bo3 with the teams in the other group. Meaning a team in Group A will face the other teams in Group A twice and face the teams in Group B once. In the playoffs, the format single-elimination tournament is used. Many fans expect this new format to be scary and more challenging since the teams are graded with points instead of wins and losses and in the playoffs, there are no Upper and Lower brackets. Also, there's another match to determine the 3rd and 4th placers.

Franchised League Model[edit]
Franchised League Model was introduced in the fourth season of MPL Indonesia aiming to make the MLBB esports scene more sustainable. For a one-time franchise fee of USD 1,000,000, a team gets a permanent slot at the league.[41][42] Other features of the league include:
- A salary cap
- More than 50% of the revenue will be shared with the teams
- Players get contracts with a fixed minimum salary and a minimum contract length of six months per season
- No team relegation
The high fee have been criticized by many people.[43]
