The Moderus Gamma is an articulated tram, manufactured by Modertrans Poznań and produced since 2016.
History
The first concept of the Moderus Gamma tram was developed in 2007, shortly after, it was rejected. It later came back in 2013, when Modertrans Poznań got the funding for implementation of their concept. The prototype was finished in 2016 and was shown on 18 November of that year in the manufacturer's factory in Biskupice. In July 2017, MPK Poznań ordered fifty new trams of that family (30 Uni-directional & 20 Bi-directional). On 15 May 2017 MPK Poznań started the operation of a new prototype. In the early days of October that year, the vehicle started tests in Gdańsk, which ended in December 2017. In May 2018, the prototype returned to operation in MPK Poznań. On October 14th 2018, Moderus Gamma LF02AC was revealed for MPK Poznań, which entered passenger service on 20 December 2018. They are expected to replace almost life-expired Konstal 105Na and Düwag GT8 trams. From September 1st, MPK Wrocław will be testing the prototype.
Genesis
On 31 January 2005 Modertrans Poznań was founded. In 2006 the company delivered the first Moderus Alfa two-car trams, which were heavy modernisations of Konstal 105N trams. In 2009 the first Moderus Beta trams were made as a refurbishment to Düwag N8C vehicles. In 2011 the company made the first partially Low Floor tram from scratch, it was named Moderus Beta as well, but in their portfolio the only 100% Low Floor tram was missing.
Earlier, in 2007, the bid for two new trams for Bydgoszcz, Modertrans offered a fully low floor tram model named "Gamma", but PESA Bydgoszcz S.A won the bid, delivering the Tramicus models. In 2008 the prototype was planned to be released between 2008 and 2009, but that didn't happen. The implementation of the project returned five years later.
Prototype
On 1 November 2013 Modertrans with Faculty of Transport Engineering of Poznań University of Technology began the implementation of the project Innowacyjny tramwaj miejski. Co-sponsored by the National Centre for Research and Development in Poland and the European Union from European Regional Development Fund within the framework of this project The low floor tram had to be built equipped with innovative devices and solutions for improving travel comfort.
Technical specifications
The trams are 32,010 mm long, 2,400 mm wide and feature IGBT inverters, SiC voltage converters and TCMS System from MEDCOM.
Livery variations
The prototype carries the dark blue livery, while the LF02AC Model carries the best known green-yellow livery, the Bi-directional sets have all green on bottom, with the black on the top with the yellow big stripe on it.
